SG Ball Jets get ready for Semi showdown with Balmain

The Newtown Jets have qualified for the 2009 SG Ball Cup semi-final series, and now go into a knockout semi-final against the Balmain Tigers at Penrith next Saturday.

The Jets were dealt a stern lesson as to what might lie ahead in the upcoming finals series when they were thrashed 40-14 by competition heavyweights Parramatta in the ninth and final competition round of the SG Ball Cup.

A game of two halves

The Eels had the game well in hand with a commanding 28-4 halftime lead and punished Newtown's lack of application and fragile defence.

The Newtown boys made a much better contest of the second half but were never really likely to challenge Parramatta's daunting points start.

Player performances

Jets frontrowers Lepuha Paseka and Samson Manu'a were Newtown's best forwards and neither prop backed off in their joint confrontation with the giant Parramatta pack.

Winger, Michael Mizrahie, scored two tries and continues to advance up the competition's try-scoring table.

Centre, Cheyse Blair, was a trifle tentative on occasions in his first game back from injury but showed some classy touches during the match.

Next game

Newtown plays Balmain in the SG Ball Cup knockout semi-final round at the CUA Stadium, Penrith next Saturday, 18 April, at 11.00am.

The Sydney Roosters Junior Rugby League Harold Matthews Shield team lost to Parramatta on Saturday by 38-16 but still qualified for the 2009 semi-finals. Advancing to the qualifying round has been an outstanding achievement by team coach John Dowall, his coaching and support staff plus all the enthusiastic squad members. The Roosters JRL face up to Parramatta again next Saturday at the CUA Stadium, Penrith at 12.30pm.

In the fifth round of the NSW Cup Newtown travels across "The Ditch" to take on the in-form Auckland Vulcans next Saturday, 18 April. This match is to be played at the Walter Massey Park, Mangere, and is timed to start at 11.00am (Auckland time).
