Setting our players up for a great season
Newtown supporters need have no fear as to the professional preparation of those Newtown-registered players who have been in training since early November under the eagle eyes of Head Coach Greg Matterson and Strength & Conditioning Maestro Dennis "Rowdy" Yates.
These lads will be competing for places in Newtown's 2008 NSW Cup team against players from our partnership club (and fellow 1908 NSWRL foundation club) the Sydney Roosters - and will certainly not lack anything in strength, fitness, toughness and resolution.
The Newtown gymnasium is situated in a property provided for the use of the Newtown RLFC by long-time Jets supporter, Director, Life Member and sponsor Terry Rowney. The gym proved to be Newtown's ace in the 2005 and 2006 seasons when the club's Jim Beam Cup team made the semi-finals in 2005 and the Grand Final in 2006 - due in large measure to the top class preparation given to our players in Rowdy Yates's notorious House of Pain.
The gym has never looked better in 2008 and has a number of improved features.
The facility is airy, well-lit and appropriately painted throughout in royal blue and white. There are ample toilet facilities, showers, chilled water bubblers plus the complex is scrupulously maintained in terms of cleanliness.
Modern training equipment includes treadmills, exercise bikes, rowing machines plus a wide range of weights and exercise stations that is the equal of any other professional Rugby League club. There is also a general purpose training room with a large floor area of compressed rubber tiles - this is ideal for circuit work in wet weather utilising boxing and medicine ball routines.
Another feature of the complex is a respite room with comfortable chairs, in which the walls are festooned with framed historic Newtown photographs and posters ranging from 1908 to 2007, many of these items being on long term loan from Newtown Directors Terry Rowney and John Lynch.
Who is "Rowdy" Yates?
The club's strength and conditioning coach Dennis "Rowdy" Yates is one of the best in the business.
Dennis was a St Peters junior and was first connected with fitness training at Newtown as far back as 1971. He has also worked at the Eastern Suburbs RLFC, the City Tattersalls Club and in other sports like boxing.
He has been on the gymnasium and school fitness staff at SCEGS Redlands for many years and has been back in the Newtown camp since 2002. Dennis is also a valuable man on game-days with his competent and unflappable management skills from the bench.
