The Newtown Jets contested the 2005 Rugby League season in a strategic partnership with the Cronulla-Sutherland club. Although both clubs mutually agreed not to extend the joint venture beyond 2005, the success of the association was clearly evident in two ways.

  • Both of the Newtown Club’s senior teams, the Premier League and Jim Beam Cup sides made the semi-finals
  • Several of the Sharks youngsters who had been on loan to Newtown graduated into the Cronulla NRL ranks during the year

2006

In August 2005, the Newtown Rugby League Football Club announced its partnership with a fellow foundation club of the NSW Rugby League, the Sydney Roosters. The formation of this partnership between two of Sydney's 1908 foundation Rugby League clubs was a milestone in the history of two iconic sporting institutions.

The two clubs had shared the use of Henson Park during the past twenty years and had junior clubs playing in the same junior Rugby League competitions. With the forming of the strategic partnership, the Newtown Jets assumed the role of being the Sydney Roosters VB Premier League team following the completion of the 2005 season.

Newtown's agreement with the Sydney Roosters is for a five year period, with the option for a further five years.

The 2006 Premier League season saw immediate success for the partnership

  • The Newtown Jets secured second place on the premiership ladder and hosted a home semi-final.
  • The team came within seconds of premiership victory, only losing to the Parramatta side in the last moments of extra time.

The Newtown Jim Beam Cup side also reached the Grand Final, going down to the Sydney Bulls.

2007

Newtown did not field a Jim Beam Cup side in 2007 but the early season form of the Premier League side was encouraging and Newtown held a good position on the ladder at the end of Round 11.

The mid-season loss of players in key positions cruelled our season but supporters can look back on some great moments, such as the visit of Manfred Moore and the great form of some young players who earned representative honours.

Despite the season's disappointments, we retained both the Tom Raudonikis Cup [Vs Wests] and the Frank Hyde Shield [Vs North Sydney] and our 2007 Awards Night celebrated the achievements of many talented young players who wore the Royal Blue with pride.
